So ... the Padres win yesterday?

Ha ha. Trick question.

Ha.

I'm having a really hard time getting revved up for baseball this season, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because all the signs indicate that the Padres are going to be even more pathetic than last year. Or perhaps I'm just saving my enthusiasm for next season when they move into their shiny new downtown ballpark, which--huge civic boondoggle and money-pit though it may be--will actually have wheelchair seating out in the open instead of way in the back row, and unlike the current stadium, won't look like it's supposed to have a 30-foot-high statue of Enver Hoxha out front. The higher-ups in the Padres organization deny it, but everyone who follows baseball here knows that they've already written off this season in anticipation of next year's plush new digs. As if the Padres have a chance in hell of making it to the World Series before 2012, anyway.

I know ... whine whine whine. It's my own fault for switching my allegiance away from the Dodgers when I moved to San Diego. And it's not like I'm rooting for the Cubs or the Red Sox, at least. Show me someone who knows in his heart that the universe has a cruel and capricious streak, and I'll show you a Red Sox fan. If the Russians had invented baseball, there'd be a whole shelf in the library full of 800-page novels about Bill Buckner alone.
