2003-11-20 - 2:15 p.m. Undoubtedly you've all read Margaret Cho's blog entry for today, so I won't link to it again. But allow me to direct your attention to this instead. Why the hell hasn't this Kennedy ever run for President? I'd vote for him--and that's saying a lot, since I've generally regarded the whole clan as either soulless and amoral powermongers or tragic figures being forced to work off all the bad karma of that vile bastard Joe Sr. As for "gay marriage" (and what a loaded term that is) here are a few thoughts to ponder: * I wouldn't worry too much yet about whether this is going to be the GOP's big "wedge" issue. Worry instead about another "unexpected" terrorist attack on U.S. soil that just happens to occur close enough to the election for the ensuing rally-round-the-flag sentiment to sweep Bush, Cheney, Rove and Ashcroft back into the White House. Have I ever mentioned that I don't trust this President one damn bit? * If it does turn out to be an election issue, the Democrats are pretty much fucked. On the upside, that should mean they have nothing to lose by taking a firm stand. It's high time that liberals stopped letting the RNC and Fox News define the parameters of debate for them. Whoever the Dem candidate is, the least fucked-up approach he can take to this issue is to say, "I support the right of people to fall in love with, make love to, and/or marry whomever they wish, so long as you're not Michael Jackson," and then follow it up with, "By the way, the influence that the President has on this issue amounts to exactly zero, anyway, so howzabout we talk about the tanking economy, our broken health care system, or Bush's screwups in Iraq now?" * I think that Dean could pull that off. Kerry couldn't, but he'd try. Gephardt wouldn't even try. Lieberman would simply try me-tooing the conservatives and end up getting sand kicked in his face from both the left and the right. As for Clark, I have no idea what he'd do. And who are the other candidates, again? *** Speaking of homoeroticism, I watched Smallville last night. I got thoroughly annoyed with that show three episodes into the first season and stopped watching it regularly, but last night rocked. Not only did they use Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" in the final scene, but the most irritating character on the show got the shit kicked out of her by a horse. Everything I hate goes away in the end, yeah! Oh, and Jake 2.0 is the funnest hour of teevee since the first three seasons of Buffy. Check it out before it gets cancelled. *** |
