2001-03-06 - Night

Sorry about the ketchup burst yesterday. I watched way too much TV coverage of the Santee shooting and I think I ODd on stupidity as a result.

I did, however, hear a couple of cool stories at the meeting of the journalists organization last night--stories of being chased by cops while trying to get past police barricades, driving the wrong way on major streets during rush hour so as to reach the scene before any of the other stations, that sort of thing. One thing that struck everyone who interviewed students after the shooting was how all the kids seemed to have had their talking points already prepared. Here they are, survivors of a deadly attack, watching SWAT teams swarm over their high school while every TV camera in San Diego County is pointed straight at them, and they still manage to speak in perfectly composed, grammatically correct 15-second soundbites. They sounded about a million times smarter than the reporters, frankly. I suppose there have been so many high-school shootings in recent years that every teenager in America knows what theyll be asked and how theyll be expected to answer should they live through it. Either that, or were all so media-savvy now that were able to slip into our preassigned roles the instant a mike gets shoved in our faces. Who needs The Actors Studio when youve got the ActionNews Team?

But enough of that. Allow me to point out briefly that Rocket from the Crypts new CD, Group Sounds, fucking rocks the house. It went on sale today at 10:00. I had my copy by 10:30. Im their bitch, they know it, and Im man enough to admit it.

Oh, and Dick Cheney is in the hospital, again. Remember when we all worried that Bush Sr. might kick off and leave us with Dan Quayle as President? Now were worried that the Vice President might die in office and the President might appoint someone even dumber than himself. Personally, Id just as soon keep having a Veep thats smarter--just think, if Papa Bush hadnt been Vice President, Ronald Reagan might have had to handle Iran-Contra all by himself and just imagine the fine mess hed have made of things.
