AbbeyNormal just asked me what a fish taco is. Allow me to answer publicly, as it gives me the opportunity Ive been waiting for to gush about them.

Whats a fish taco? Its the Food of the Fucking Gods, thats what.

The fish is usually something light and non-oily, like whitefish or mahi-mahi--although Ive had fish tacos made with salmon, shrimp, crab or even lobster. Beyond that, the possibilities are infinite. The fish can be breaded and fried, or not. You can use corn tortillas or flour, lettuce or cabbage, green salsa or red, sour cream or guacamole, or all of it. Or not. Wash it down with an ice cold margarita (on the rocks, goddamn it--none of that tongue-numbing slushy crap they serve at El Torito) or a tall bottle of Dos Equis and prepare to be transported into heaven.

My Crazy Uncle Joe and I once got in an argument online with someone in Texas (where Mexican food isnt authentic unless its been soaked in lard and smothered with yellow cheese, apparently) who kept insisting that fish tacos werent really Mexican but some kind of cross-cultural abomination that could only happen in California. You can imagine the amount of diplomacy we brought to bear in explaining that fish tacos originally came from Baja California, and that in spite of all the American-owned sweatshops dotting the landscape Baja is still part of Mexico, and what the fuck is "Tex-Mex" but a cross-cultural abomination, anyway?

Joe and I are just regular ol princes of tact, we are.

But anyway, when my favorite polyamorous lesbians from Atlanta descend on San Diego next month, its gonna be fish tacos all around.

Stop snickering.
